Student Regent-Designate Miguel Craven
Miguel Craven is the 2025–26 Student Regent-Designate. He is currently pursuing his Master’s in Energy Systems at UC Davis, having recently earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from UC Merced. A proud Californian, Miguel is deeply committed to the UC system and has long advocated for stronger state support—both social and fiscal—to ensure the University remains accessible and equitable for all.
Miguel's leadership journey began at UC Merced, where he served as Student Body President of the Associated Students. In that role, he prioritized expanding funding opportunities for student organizations and creating new pathways for professional development and creative expression. He also continuously advocated at the State level for improved student resources, trying to develop a more equitable education for all. One of his most notable achievements was leading the campaign for a Student Union Building on campus, which successfully passed a student fee referendum to fund its design and construction. This initiative aimed to establish a centralized space where vital campus resources could operate, and students could collaborate, connect, and thrive.
In addition to his campus leadership, Miguel served as the Student Observer to the UC Board of Regents’ Committee on Finance and Capital Strategies. In this capacity, he advocated for systemwide improvements in housing and financial access, leveraging his background in manufacturing and construction management to inform and support infrastructure and funding initiatives.
Miguel’s advocacy extends far beyond administrative roles. Raised in Southern California and advancing his education in the Central Valley, his diverse upbringing has shaped his deep awareness of the inequities students face across the state. He is especially passionate about elevating underrepresented voices, whether from multicultural communities or non-traditional fields like STEM, to empower others to engage confidently in spaces where they’ve historically been underrepresented.
As Student Regent, Miguel is focused on making the UC a more inclusive and responsive institution. His priorities include increasing access to housing, supporting freedom of expression, and ensuring that the University remains a space where diversity of thought and identity is not only welcomed but celebrated. While his academic interests lie in Energy Systems, Miguel remains a steadfast advocate for both scientific innovation and social change, firmly believing that the UC is where both begin.
